Family Support Group

Family Support Group for our Immigrant Neighbors

A volunteer-driven initiative supporting immigrant families with resources, legal counsel, and compassionate community connection.

Our Mission

Caring for our neighbors, strengthening our community

As a volunteer-driven initiative affiliated with the Akron Area Interfaith Council, our mission is to support immigrant families by connecting them with local resources, fulfilling basic needs, and offering legal counsel. We partner with organizations across our community to maximize our collective impact and ensure no family faces these challenges alone.

Real Stories

The families we serve

Behind every case is a person with dreams, resilience, and an unwavering hope for a better life.

🌿

Leona’s Story

20+ years in the U.S.

Leona is a single parent continuing to pay to renew her work visa while striving to become a U.S. citizen — all while caring for her son with special needs. We have helped her through assisting with legal fees and accompaniment to ICE check-ins. Her faith is amazing. She is strong, vocal, and deeply integrated into the American way of life.

Vilma’s Story

10 years locally · Almost to citizenship

Seeking asylum following her brother’s murder, death threats, and her cousin’s disappearance, Vilma and her family from Honduras have established themselves through consistent employment while raising two children. They are almost to the end of their journey towards citizenship. She will often make her Guatemalan coffee for us.

Walter’s Story

Known to FSG for 9 years

Walter has a wife and two children. He suffers from severe glaucoma — we helped him obtain medical treatment at the Cleveland Clinic. Since his incarceration, he has not received medical care. The Family Support Group has helped Walter secure legal services and provided funds for the commissary. Advocates attend his court hearings and support his family.
